Handling A Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. The pregnant women will be said to have gestational diabetes when getting high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, but have never had diabetes before. It is about 4% the gestational diabetes affecting of all pregnancies that make it one of the top health concerns related to pregnancy.

You may ask, what is the cause of gestational diabetes ? It is no body knows exactly about the true cause, but there are many factors contributing to it. Some contributing factors that might increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes include : obesity in the woman, a family history of diabetes, older maternal age (over the age of 30), having had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy, a previous delivery of a large baby (greater than 9 pounds).

One thing to be known about the geatational diabetes is the risk of it. It involves both mother and baby because of the high sugar levels in blood. There is an increased risk

 

of developing diabetes for both mother and child if a woman had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy. Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes have a greater change of developing diabetes. Not only macrosomia, or a fat-baby, but there are also other risks involved with. The macrosomia can make health problems to the babies like damage to their shoulders during birth, or a higher risk for breathing problems.

It is important to start treatment quickly of the gestational diabetes because it can hurt the mother and the baby. Treating gestational diabetes in most cases,is managed by diet and exercise, and goes away after the baby is born. You should also consult your doctor for special meal plans and scheduled physical activity.

There is no need to panic when getting the gestational diabetes. There is still a good news with the correct diet and exercise. Keeping your blood glucose levels under control and giving a healthy start for your baby are a good things to handle the gestational diabetes.
